Thompson, CT: NASCAR Winston Cup Star Tony Stewart will compete at Thompson International Speedway on July 17, 2002. Stewart will go head-to-head with Thompson’s own NASCAR Weekly Racing Series National Champion Ted Christopher. During the Winston Cup Series trek to New England, Stewart will jump aboard another of Christopher’s Mystique Motorsports #13 Modifieds. The two will fight for supremacy in equally prepared racecars in a good old fashion grudge match.
The event will continue what is becoming a tradition at Thompson International Speedway. Last season local hero Steve Park took on DEI teammate Michael Waltrip in a match race for the ages. With some history behind them, the Stewart/Christopher match guarantees to provide much of the same excitement.
There will be no decided advantage for either driver when they meet in July. Christopher has thousands of laps, a boatload of feature wins, and a national championship at the famed Connecticut oval; but Stewart has proven to be a master of open-wheel racing. The Indianapolis-native has found success in every USAC division and has an IRL championship to his credit. He has even tried his hand at asphalt Modified racing at New Smyrna Speedway’s World Series during Speed Weeks several years back were he first encountered Ted Christopher.
These “edgy” drivers have similar reputations and even more similar driving styles. They will let it all hang out for a win. “It should be a lot of fun,” said Christopher with a grin.
Five divisions of NASCAR Weekly Racing Series action will round out a full night of racing on Wednesday, July 17th. Thursday, July 18th has been designated as a rain date.
Will Stewart have anything for Christopher on his home turf? Find out on Wednesday, July 17, 2002.
